SOLAS LAW proves to be overdue for revision after Costa Concordia disaster. SS Yarmouth Castle horrendous fire recalled.

A South Korean passenger walks with Italian firefighters after being rescued from the luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia, which ran aground near the Tuscan island of Giglioa – after spending two days in a cabin two decks above the water line. It is understood the pair, who are 29 years old, are in good condition.

Cruise and liner history: SOLAS LAW proves to be overdue for revision after (Carnival Corp) Costa Concordia disaster.  SS Yarmouth Castle horrendous fire recalled.

The Yarmouth Castle disaster led to the creation of the Safety of Life at Sea law (SOLAS) in 1966 – but the recent (Carnival Corp) Costa Concordia disaster has proved the law totally useless and manipulated by the USA cruise industry.

Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) says the Italian cruise ship accident that left 11 people dead shows the need for more regulation of the industry.

SOPA – More “neo-Nazi” like laws from the U.S. Government to shut down the internet. Backed by congress, the MPAA and the US Chamber.

“Defeating this is a victory for free speech. Sad to see how big money and corporate greed can work to curb free speech if we the masses are less vigilant.”

Social History: More “Nazi” like laws from the U.S. Government to shut down the internet.  Call your representatives today and complain to the neo-Nazis that are ruining the USA. What do United States Chamber of Commerce and the Motion Picture Association of America have in common?  These groups are trying to shut down the internet and are the lobbying group behind this Nazi/American law.

Are Christopher J. Dodd (CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America) and Thomas J. Donohue (CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce) a modern day version of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels?  They would be very comfortable with Hitler’s philosophy regarding freedom of speech.

Master propagandist of the Nazi regime and dictator of its cultural life for twelve years, Joseph Goebbels would be very comfortable in Washington help shut down the internet.

GOOD LUCK TO VICTIMS OF CARNIVAL CORP’S COSTA CONCORDIA…Wait until they read the Carnival Corp passage contract…

“It was dog eat dog…” Passenger aboard the Carnival Corp’s Costa Concordia…

Carnival Corp’s Costa Concordia Captain hauled off to jail. Passengers aboard the stricken Costa cruise ship say that they observed Italian Master Francesco Schettino draped in a blanket aboard a lifeboat heading to safety as the vessel’s crew and passengers struggled for their lives.

There is also talk that the captain intentionally deviated from course to “buzz the island,” which if true takes this case from sinple negligence to recklessness or intentional misconduct.   Arrested in Rome for manslaughter and abandoning ship, Captain Schettino talked about “lateral projections of rocks” and other phantom rubbish, rather than his own foolishness, which tore the hull apart and doomed his cruise ship.  He boasted that he saved lives and was the last to leave the vessel, apparently forgetting about his chief purser who was trapped aboard the ship. The captain of a vessel is the supreme master of his ship at sea.

The captain is ultimately responsible not only for the safe navigation of the vessel, but for the discipline and order of the crew and the safety of all crew and passengers. Initial reports suggest that Captain Schettino failed on all accounts.

In an unregulated industry which looks for a scapegoat, the cruise line (Carnival Corp) will focus on an irresponsible and renegade captain as the sole cause of the disaster which unfolded this weekend.

If passenger accounts are correct, Captain Schettino will long be considered a coward who abandoned his responsibilities and duties after wrecking the Concordia and killing scores of innocents in the process.

The ship should be considered as not very seaworthy from the photos.

Billionaire Micky Arison is the ultimate man responsible for hiring the captain. He heads Carnival Corp.  They own Costa. He has refused to go to Italy.  Carnival Corp is as responsible for this tragedy as Schetinno.  Arison has hired a major public relations firm to do a media spin so Carnival is not responsible. This is what happens when you have an unregulated cruise industry.  Remember that this was an American owned ship. Arison is hiding out in Miami with other Carnival Corp executives.

Cruise and Liner History: Victims of Carnival Corp’s Costa Concordia will have difficult time getting money out of American Miama based cruise company.

The old adage says that the captain goes down with his ship, but in the case of the Costa Concordia (Carnival Corp), survivor accounts allege that Captain Francesco Schettino and his crew abandoned the sinking cruise liner while hundreds of passengers remained on board, according to CNN.

Captain Schettino reportedly had a back-and-forth with the Port Authority, who told him to “Get on board on the ship” and to report “how many people there are,” per audio released in Corriere della Serra and translated by The Telegraph.

Infrared video shot by the Italian coast guard and published by London Daily Mail showed passengers aboard the sinking cruise ship sliding down a rope to safety, one by one. Per the report, one French passenger, Daniele Perruchon, said children were screaming, “I don’t want to die,” as the crew pushed past them, trying to save themselves.

Andrea Davis, a woman from Calgary, Canada, on holiday with her husband, Laurence, described the ordeal to The Calgary Herald.

“People were stampeding and bodies were flying and crushing into walls and doors were flying off hinges and glass was flying from the upper levels,” Davis said.

Davis’ husband gave a more succinct description to the Calgary Herald.

“It was dog eat dog,” Laurence Davis said.

From the RMS TITANIC to the USA (Carnival Corp) owned COSTA CONCORDIA… nothing is unsinkable.

(Carnival Corps) Costa Concordia Survivors: Crew Fled In Life Jackets!

“Cruise ships can be “death traps” IMO. I’m sure evacuation was confusing, 4000 panicked people trying to escape a sinking “tin can”? Wow. Evacuations need to be practiced repeatedly to be effective and it’s IMPOSSIBLE to do this on a cruise ship with “weekend warriors”…”These top-heavy lavish-tubs are unsafe even dockside! One wonders if Capt. was sober, and seems Navigator & Pilot were not at all skilled; –even worse is being trapped in the ship’s Glass-elevator (-where divers may still find some poor souls)!!!” “These ships are floating hell holes… the crews don’t speak english… they aren’t trained…with greedy Americans making all the money like Carnival Corp…” “Never again aboard a giant ship…” A few of many comments…

Royal Caribbean’s new Oasis of the Seas.  The largest cruise ship in the world.  Imagine having to evacuate this floating condo with over 9000 passengers and crew in a major storm or fire at sea.  Good luck!

Absolutely terrifying video of passengers trying to reach lifeboats on stricken Carnival Corp liner Costa Concordia. U.S.-based Carnival Corporation, the owner of the luxury cruise ship sinking off the Italian coast and the world’s largest cruise line, faces millions of dollars in losses from the accident and perhaps years of litigation over damage claims.  Carnival is based in the southern city of Miami, Florida and annually attracts about half the world’s 15 million sea-going tourists to its 101 ships. The corporation runs 11 cruise lines, including some of the best known global brands — Carnival, Cunard, Holland America, Princess and others.

MICKY ARISON MEET SIR BRUCE ISMAY…

Cruise and Liner History: Is Micky Arison of Carnival Crop – the Costa Concordia owner – the new Sir “Titanic” Bruce Ismay?

"Showboating" Italian Style...

Passengers blame Micky Arison and Carnival Corporation for Costa Concordia wreck…

(Left: Arison watching the Costa from Miami - refused to head for Italy and meet stricken passengers.) In an unexplained absence from the scene of the stricken cruise ship, Costa Concordia, off the coast of Italy, Micky Arison, chairman and CEO of Carnival Corp (NYSE:CCL), is managing the fallout of the accident from Miami.

(Sir Bruce Ismay – owned the Titanic and left the stricken ship like the Concrodia “showboating” captain.  Ismay has been described as one of history’s greatest cowards.) Arison has engaged communications consultants Burson-Masteller in an effort to allay concerns about the safety about the company’s ships, particularly in the middle of the peak cruise bookings season. “Whenever there are fatalities and serious injuries, it’s important for the most senior leadership to be visible,” said Peter Hirsch, director of reputation risk at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, without specifically commenting on Carnival. “Some visibility is certainly a good thing.”

Capsizing: Panicked passengers wearing life-jackets assemble to escape from the ship after it ran on to rocks.

The accident is reportedly the cause of human error, and may be due to a diversion the captain made from the computerized course, to show the tourists the nearby Tuscan island of Giglio. The captain is currently in criminal custody, and the press is being faced by Pier Luigi Foschi, CEO of the Costa unit.

Foschi has held two press conferences in Genoa, Italy, to address questions about the crash, and said that top group executives may still come to the scene to help.

(Left: At least the Titanic wasn’t “show boating”!

“Carnival’s management has already offered to come here if we believe it’s appropriate for them to come,” Foschi said. “We’ll decide together.” The company’s senior management “has been in constant contact with the leadership of its Costa unit,” COO Frank said in an e-mailed statement.

The accident has had an extremely negative fallout on the stocks of cruise lines – Carnival fell 14 percent to $29.44, Royal Caribbean (NYSE:RCL) was down 6.3 percent and similar falls were noticed in cruise companies quoted in London and Oslo.

THE SS ATLANTIC…

American Banner Lines 1957-1958

ab.jpgatlantic01.jpg

Arnold Bernstein chartered in the summer of 1948 a passenger ship the CONTINENTAL (ex ANCON of 1902) for four round voyages from New York to Plymouth and Antwerp. In 1950-1951 Arnold Bernstein was involved with the Incres Line and their ship the EUROPA (ex MONGOLIA of 1923). She spent two seasons running between New York, Plymouth and Antwerp. After these experiences he wanted to run an economy passenger and cargo service from New York to Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Troubles for Bernstein happened when the Atlantic’s service was delayed.

Bernstein acquired the C4 standard freighter BADGER MARINE in 1957 and was rebuilt into a passenger cargo ship renamed ATLANTIC and followed the pattern set by the Holland America Line’s STATENDAM, RYNDAM and MAASDAM by devoting over 85% of the interior space to tourist class.

Bernstein’s major innovation was that all cabins had private facilities. This was unheard of in tourist class at this time. Passengers aboard the Queens, Flandre, United States, America, etc., had to walk down the passage way to the toilets and showers. The Oriana and Canberra — still had cabins in tourist class without private facilities. Bernstein new that Americans wouldn’t tolerate this in the 1950s and meet the demand for tourist class with your own bathroom.

The ATLANTIC was not one-class. The ship had a very limited number of first class cabins (not more than 40 passengers) with over 95% of the remaining accommodations tourist class (840).

First Class Baggage Tag, Tourist Class Dining Room and 4-Berth Cabin

This was not the choice of American Banner Lines but because the Trans-Atlantic Steamship trade association (dominated by Cunard and the US Lines) set minimum first, cabin and tourist class fares. If the ATLANTIC had sailed without first class the ships would have had to charge higher fares for the tourist class service — almost equal to cabin class. [Read more...]
